Unix and the Logrus
Lord Nicolas of Chaos
1 Unix Mastery
As we all know, a Logrus Master can use tendrils to affect
things beyond his physical reach. Tendrils can reach across the
universe, searching for objects, retrieving them, even putting
objects off in shadow. The initiate can pull himself to another
shadow as well. These abilities are blocked, however by barred
shadows.
A Unix Master is very similar. A terminal functions as the
equivalent of the sign of the Logrus, ``called to mind'' when the
initiate logs in. Through his terminal, the programmer can see
things and places differently. He can reach across the systems of
the Internet as if they were shadows of the universe, searching for
objects, or files with ``ftp'' tendrils. He can store objects off
in remote locations with this same method, or simply probe distant
locations to discover what is there. He can even virtually pull
himself across to another system, a technique known as ``telnetting''.
Some systems, however, are barred and inaccessible via the
Internet, and others simply have restricted access.
1.1 Traversing Unix for the First Time
It is commonly thought that one's first experience traversing
Unix means going mad for a time. Once recuperated from this
tragedy, the Unix initiate can log in at any time with no ill
effects, which takes only a few moments of concentration.
1.2 Personal and Barred Systems
A Logrus initiate can be trapped in a shadow where Logrus
tendrils cannot pass out, effectively isolating him from the rest
of the universe. Such a situation feels to the initiate as if he
had suddenly lost one of his senses, much as a mortal might feel
who is blinded.
A Unix initiate, similarly, may sometimes find himself in an
isolated system, from which the Internet is not accessible, or,
even worse, where there is no terminal available, thus his power
cannot be brought up at all. To the Unix initiate, this is true
imprisonment, as one is isolated from his power.
Some people are even known to have personal systems, where they
can control the contents. It is even possible to control the flow
of time (i.e. CPU speed and usage), for instance, or to establish
communication barriers, when one owns a system.
2 Magic vs. Code
Just as Magic is a way of manipulating the stuff of Shadow, so
is Code, whether in the form of signals, commands, or programs, a
way of manipulating the stuff of Systems.
2.1 Power Words vs. Unix Signals
Unix power words are more commonly known as ``signals'', or
sometimes as ``control codes''. They typically are simple to
activate, take effect immediately, but have no lasting duration.
Some examples are ``Power Word {SIGINT!}: Interrupt'', and ``Power
Word {SIGHUP!}: Hangup''.
2.2 Sorcery vs. Commands
Unix spells are more commonly known as ``commands'', and their
lynchpins are ``command-line arguments'' and ``user input''. Most of
these types of spells are specific to the local system, and so
someone who travels many systems must learn the appropriate
Operating System, equivalent to the Magic of Shadow. Example
spells are ``Basic Spell: Copy Program'' which is the equivalent of
the usual ``Replicate Shadow Object'' magic spell, and ``Basic Spell:
Remote Login'', which is the equivalent of the usual ``Self-Teleport''
magic spell, and is more limited than the ``telnetting'' power of the
true Unix initiate.
New spells can be hung in one's own terminal by creating ``shell
scripts'', a process which involves assembling micro-spells into a
customized form. This process of casting a new script generally
takes much longer than the actual activation of it.
2.3 Conjuration vs. Programming
Programming is the ability to conjure up artifacts of power
called ``programs''. Complex objects can be created, or new
qualities and powers can simply be added to existing objects. If
the programmer is familiar with Signals and Unix Commands, these
may be incorporated into his programs as well, providing more
flexibility and power.
One should note that a Unix initiate need not know Programming
in order to acquire artifacts of power. Sometimes programs can
simply be found using a Unix ``ftp'' search, but the more complex and
unique the program, the longer the seach will take, and may never
complete given the vastness of the Internet.

Magenta arrived to find Nicolas, Leonardo, and Rinaldo digging a shaft
next to the Abyss. "Having fun?" she asked.
"We're going to start our own," Nick informed her cheerfully.
